Check the commute before you choose

An apartment can look right and still add an hour to every working day. Before you compare kitchens and desks, put the address next to the places you will actually go, at the time you will actually travel.

We timed five everyday trips from Saldanha, where the Red and Yellow metro lines cross, for a weekday departure at 08:30. Metro minutes come from the Metro Lisboa journey planner, station to station. Walking and cycling come from OpenStreetMap routing.

Oriente and Parque das Nações are 11 minutes away on the Red line, seven stops without a change. The airport is 18 minutes on the same line. Santa Apolónia, for long-distance trains, takes 14 minutes with one change at Marquês de Pombal.

Use the confirmed address, not the nearest station.

Closer to home, the walk often wins. El Corte Inglés is an 11 minute walk or one stop on the Red line. Parque Eduardo VII is an 18 minute walk, or two stops on the Yellow line to Marquês de Pombal.

Add the walk to the platform, any change of line and the final approach. If you travel with a bike, a pushchair or equipment, check lifts and steps separately, then compare the apartments against your own week.

Start at Saldanha. Count the minutes.
